The COVID-19 pandemic has touched nearly every aspect of our lives, and the way we purchase everyday items is no exception. Because of the pandemic, adoption of non-contact methods of paying for everything from groceries to furniture has skyrocketed in 2020.
Interestingly, seniors and Baby Boomers are joining Millennials in driving this change. According to PYMNTS.com, 47 percent of seniors and Baby Boomers said they see choosing merchants based on their digital capabilities as a means of avoiding infection, and 21.7 percent of this group said their shift to online shopping is permanent.
Holiday shopping is different this year
It should come as no surprise that these changes also apply to holiday shopping, as people adhere to social distancing and CDC guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID. This holiday season, Visa® expects holiday shoppers to spend more on goods and less on travel and experiences. More than 60 percent of consumers—and 53 percent of those 55 or older—will do more than half of their holiday shopping online, up from roughly half of consumers in each of the three previous years.
Along with the shift to online shopping comes heightened concern about card security. Hancock Whitney understands that shopping with your debit and credit cards, whether online or in a store, must be safe and secure. That’s why we provide our cardholders the enhanced security capabilities of Visa Purchase Alerts.
Visa Purchase Alerts
Visa Purchase Alerts are real-time text alerts that can help debit and credit cardholders track their purchases. But, in addition to helping you manage your budget, Purchase Alerts can also alert you to potential fraud. If you receive an alert about a debit or credit card purchase that you did not make, you can notify the bank immediately that you suspect fraud has occurred.
The VISA Purchase Alerts service is available at no charge to all consumer, business, and commercial clients who use Visa debit and credit cards. Once you’re enrolled in Purchase Alerts, you’ll receive text alerts based on your settings. For instance, you can set an alert to be notified when a purchase has exceeded a certain dollar amount, and whenever a purchase is made online, by phone, or outside the United States.
An added layer of protection for your cards is now available through Visa® Purchase Alerts: Card Controls. With Card Controls, you can lock and unlock your card, block international and card-not-present transactions, and receive real-time text and/or email alerts when a transaction has processed successfully or been declined.
