Teaching young people the critical skills they need to make solid financial decisions is the focus of “Financial Cents,” a web-based financial education program sponsored by Hancock and Whitney Bank.

Preparing Students for Bright Futures

Financial Cents is part of a major initiative to deliver important financial education to elementary, middle school and high school students across our five-state footprint. Since the program’s launch in 2014, 177 schools and over 22,000 students in Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, Alabama and Florida have participated in the course.

Our partner in offering the interactive, web-based program to students is EverFi, Inc., a leading education technology company. Financial Cents is provided at no cost to the schools or taxpayers.

The course covers topics such as savings, investments, credit cards, and student loans using the latest in new media technology to expose students to the financial education they might not receive at home. Many of these students aspire to attend college, and others could be future entrepreneurs who will create a brighter future for our region. Financial Cents teaches them how to save, invest and prepare to achieve those goals.

Financial Cents

On April 28, in partnership with the New Orleans Saints, students at Edna Karr Secondary School in New Orleans participated in a leadership program and were honored at an awards ceremony for successful completion of Financial Cents.

Twenty-six schools in the New Orleans area are active in Financial Cents, and 2,124 students have participated in the program since 2014. Financial literacy is not part of the public or private education curriculum, and many young people make financial mistakes in early adulthood that take years to repair. Financial Cents educates them before they're faced with real world situations, preparing them to be successful and financially responsible adults.

By opening students’ eyes through this program, our hope is that they will realize there is a world of opportunity waiting for them. Hancock and Whitney Bank are proud to partner in this quest of helping individuals fulfill their financial hopes and dreams.
