In April, financial institutions across the country celebrate "Financial Literacy Month." Throughout this month, you will see many of the financial education activities that Hancock Whitney presents, sponsors, participates in and promotes. But we also feel it's important to celebrate educational excellence beyond finance not only in April, but throughout the year.

In 1991, The Terrebonne Foundation for Academic Excellence (TFAE) was created to assist in fundamentally improving education for students in public schools in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana. I have had the honor of serving on their board for many years. Their purpose is to create a partnership of responsibility between educators, business, community organizations and parents; to stimulate the learning of the children so that they may become responsible citizens capable of competing in the global economy and; to provide educators with resources that encourage creativity in the classroom.

For many years, Hancock Whitney has been proud to present their Distinguished Scholars and Inspirational Educators Awards - an event which honors eleven determined students and their inspiring educators. TFAE Distinguished Scholars are chosen for their ability to overcome challenges and obstacles in their life to still achieve academic success, be involved in their school and community, and serve as an example of leadership to their peers. Each scholar then selects their own Inspirational Educator, a teacher who has provided encouragement and inspiration in their life. Terrebonne Parish Teachers and Principals of the Year are also named at the annual event.

programBecause of COVID-19 restrictions, the event could not be held in person in 2021. However, each award recipient will be honored through social media and TFAE's website. Each Distinguished Scholar, Inspirational Educator, Principal of the Year, and Teacher of the Year will receive gifts purchased from local restaurants and businesses provided by Hancock Whitney. Additionally, each Inspirational Educator will gift an inscribed book of their choosing to their Distinguished Scholar thanks to a sponsorship by the Houma Times.
