Welcome to the Markets and Economic Update, provided monthly by the Hancock Whitney Investments team as an informational resource for clients and individuals who are interested in hearing our perspectives on current economic issues.

Markets and Economic Update for August

  • We are more than two thirds of the way through the third quarter, and despite a few soft spots, all indicators point to a very solid 3rd quarter for economic growth in the U.S.  David Lundgren details what is contributing to the strong economy and provides some thoughts on growth for the remainder of the year.
  • While growth in the U.S. remains robust, economic growth in several other regions, particularly in emerging markets, is struggling. Richard Chauvin discusses these struggles and how it may negatively impact growth in the United States.
  • Another potential concern is an inverted yield curve. Jeff Tanguis discusses what this means, the Fed's influence on the yield curve, and what is expected to happen in the upcoming weeks.
  • Austin Zaunbrecher breaks down the equity markets, how things looked in August, and where we see it going from here.
