A Greenlight card is a prepaid debit card for kids and teens that allows them to spend, save, and learn about money. Parents control funding and monitor usage through the Greenlight app.
There's no minimum age for a child to get a Greenlight debit card and start learning how to manage money. What matters most is whether you feel your child is ready for that responsibility. A debit card can give kids and teens the chance to practice everyday money skills while still under your guidance.
If your child understands the basics of money and seems ready for the next step, you can both take it together by opening a Hancock Whitney Freestyle Checking account in your child’s name once they turn 13. This account helps them build real-world banking skills and experience a greater sense of independence—while you remain actively involved as their guide and safety net.
A Greenlight debit card can be used everywhere that Mastercard is accepted.
However, there are certain types of transactions where a Greenlight card cannot be used. View the complete list here.
The funds underlying Greenlight Debit Card Accounts are FDIC-insured up to $250,000 and come with Mastercard’s Zero Liability Protection.1 Greenlight blocks unsafe spending categories and lets parents control or turn off cards at any time.
No, Greenlight doesn’t support money movement with Zelle®2. Instead, you can fund your child's Greenlight debit card via a transfer from your linked Hancock Whitney checking account or debit card in the Hancock Whitney app.
