During Black History Month we celebrate the legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and recognize the diverse talent HBCU graduates bring to the Hancock Whitney organization.

Dating back to 1837, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have played a pivotal role in shaping the American education landscape. In their early years, many HBCUs operated as normal schools - shaping teachers, nurses, and preachers when society denied Black Americans equal access to education. Today, nearly 190 years later, HBCUs continue to honor their founding missions while evolving into think tanks, cultural hubs, economic engines, and incubators for Black leadership across every industry.
Cultivating Confidence, Competence, and Community
Stories like these underscore the essential role historically Black institutions play in shaping the nation’s future workforce and leaders. HBCUs represent a powerful model of preparing students not only for academic success but also for life beyond college campuses. Experiences that some may view as limitations or challenges often become the catalyst that teaches students to think critically, solve complex problems, and adapt to diverse environments. In doing so, HBCUs cultivate graduates with a strong sense of purpose and a commitment to creating solutions that uplift their communities and, ultimately, contribute to the broader global landscape.
Supporting HBCUs
Our commitment extends beyond the classroom as we actively recruit diverse talent from these institutions for both employment and corporate internship opportunities. We demonstrate this commitment through continued support of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) via events such as the Walk for Education and the Mayor’s Masked Ball, which help generate vital scholarship funding for HBCU students.
On campuses, we engage directly with students through workshops that strengthen professional development skills, enhance résumé readiness, and prepare them to navigate internship opportunities while exposing them to career pathways within the banking and finance industry—sectors where People of Color have historically been underrepresented. Additionally, we provide resources that enable students to broaden their academic and professional horizons by participating in conferences and competitions, further enriching their educational experience and expanding their professional networks.
For nearly two centuries, HBCUs have nurtured talent, fostered leadership, and built communities that empower students to excel. The graduates featured here reflect a broader legacy—one defined by resilience, excellence, and a deep commitment to serving others. As we continue to invest in these institutions and their students, we play a role in strengthening today's workforce and shaping the leaders of tomorrow.
