Every career has a beginning. At Hancock Whitney, that beginning can be an internship that sparks discovery, builds confidence, and opens the door to new possibilities.
Through our Early Career and Internship Programs, associates gain hands-on experience while building relationships with mentors, leaders, and peers across the organization. For some, an internship becomes more than a summer opportunity — it becomes a foundation for a career.
Dylan Adams, Camron Balket, Mia Luquet, and Jordan Trufant, began their careers at Hancock Whitney as interns eager to learn about banking. Now part of Hancock Whitney’s Officer Development Program, they are gaining experience across multiple areas of the business while building skills and relationships to support their career goals.
While their paths into banking were different, their experiences point to a common theme: when curiosity, mentorship, and opportunity come together, careers can begin to take shape.
How Do Banking Internships Help Students Explore Career Paths?
A banking internship can give students something a classroom alone cannot: a closer look at what it is like to build a career in financial services. By working alongside experienced professionals, interns can explore different areas of the business, apply what they have learned and discover where their interests and strengths may fit.
Discovering a Place to Grow
For many participants, banking was not always the intended destination.
Jordan Trufant, a Finance and Economics student at Xavier University of Louisiana, first connected with Hancock Whitney through an HBCU luncheon.
“It felt like a genuine conversation with people who wanted to know more about me,” Jordan recalled. “After that, I knew I wanted to join a company focused on authentic connections.”
Camron Balket discovered Hancock Whitney while exploring internship opportunities.
“If I’m being honest, pure curiosity drew me to the internship program,” Camron said. “As I learned more about the company’s culture and commitment to serving communities, I wanted to be part of it.”
For Dylan Adams, the difference was apparent from the beginning.
“Hancock Whitney was the only bank whose banker sat down with me and showed me where I could find opportunities and apply,” Dylan said. “Looking back, that small act spoke volumes about the bank’s culture and commitment to people.”
Although each participant arrived with different goals, they shared a desire to learn, gain real-world experience, and find a career path where they could make an impact.
What Can You Learn During a Banking Internship?
Banking internships can provide exposure to much more than traditional banking transactions. At Hancock Whitney, participants have gained experience across areas including compliance and risk management, credit analysis, business banking, procurement, and financial operations.
Along the way, they discovered that banking extends far beyond numbers and transactions.
“My internship strengthened my interest in banking by opening my eyes to all the opportunities the industry offers beyond financial centers,” Camron said.
“These experiences taught me that banking is so much more than numbers on a computer screen. Banking is a people business, and success in banking is success with people,” Dylan said.
For Mia Luquet, who interned in the Bank Secrecy Act Department, the experience revealed how many career paths exist within the industry.
“It made me realize there are so many different departments in banking,” Mia said. “The more I learned about the bank, the more interested I became in all the different opportunities available.”
Whether reviewing financial information, supporting internal teams or interacting with clients and community partners, interns gained a deeper understanding of how different areas of the bank work together to serve clients and communities.
Why Mentorship and Relationships Matter in Early Careers
Technical skills and professional experience were important takeaways, but each participant also pointed to relationships as one of the most meaningful parts of the experience.
Mentors, colleagues and leaders shared knowledge, offered encouragement, and helped participants understand the business from different perspectives.
“Work truly does not feel like work when you’re enjoying what you do and who you’re doing it with,” Camron said.
Jordan credits much of his development to the people he met throughout the organization.
“The most important thing I learned was how valuable genuine relationships can be. I met so many interesting people who taught me about different areas of the bank and helped me grow.”
For Dylan, those relationships helped make the transition from intern to full-time associate feel seamless.
“Rather than being brought in as a new associate, I was working alongside bankers who already knew my goals and were invested in my growth.”
Across their stories, mentorship emerged as a recurring theme. Leaders and teammates encouraged participants to ask questions, seek new experiences, and continue expanding their networks.
How an Officer Development Program Can Build on an Internship
For these associates, the Officer Development Program provided an opportunity to build on what they learned as interns. Its rotational structure gives participants exposure to multiple areas of the bank while helping them develop a broader foundation of knowledge.
“The opportunity to increase my knowledge of banking while rotating throughout the organization was what interested me most,” Camron said.
Mia was drawn to the opportunity to explore where her interests and strengths align.
“I loved hearing about other departments during my internship. The Officer Development Program gives me the opportunity to see those areas firsthand and find where I fit best.”
For Jordan, the program offers an opportunity to explore new challenges and continue building on what he learned during his internship.
“I’ve learned so much about different parts of the bank already. Now I’m excited to experience the business and client-focused side of the organization.”
The rotational experience is helping participants broaden their perspectives while preparing them to make meaningful contributions wherever their careers lead.
Growing Through Mentorship and Opportunity
As they move through the program, participants continue to develop new skills while gaining exposure to areas such as commercial banking, wealth management, prospecting, client relationship management, and lending.
Just as importantly, they continue to learn from experienced professionals who help guide their development.
Across every story, one theme remains consistent: growth happens when people invest in people.
Through formal training, leadership exposure, mentorship and day-to-day coaching, participants describe an environment that encourages learning and supports professional development. The result is an experience designed not only to develop future bankers, but also to help cultivate future leaders.
What Advice Do Former Interns Have for Future Interns?
When asked what advice they would give students considering an internship at Hancock Whitney, their responses were consistent: be yourself, stay curious, ask questions. and build relationships.
“The best thing to be as an intern is a sponge. Learn and soak up all the information you can while you’re here,” Jordan said.
Looking Ahead
Although their long-term goals vary, all four associates share a common vision for the future: helping others succeed.
Camron aspires to grow into a leadership role where he can help clients achieve their financial goals. Jordan hopes to one day mentor an intern of his own and pass along the wisdom and support he received. Dylan wants to become a trusted resource for clients, colleagues and communities while paying forward the mentorship that shaped his early career. Mia hopes to become an expert in her field and one day help guide the next generation of associates.
Their goals reflect the same values that first attracted them to Hancock Whitney: service, growth, relationships and the opportunity to make a lasting impact.
