Statisticians play a vital role in shaping the strategies and success of teams across all levels of competition. Whether tracking player performance, analyzing game trends, or predicting outcomes, sports statisticians help teams and organizations make informed decisions based on real-time data.
One of their primary responsibilities is live data tracking—keeping a close eye on games as they happen and recording key stats in real-time. Sports statisticians ensure every crucial moment is documented precisely including tracking the number of rebounds in basketball.
Basem Elkhatib, Revenue Finance Manager for the New Orleans Pelicans, who previously served as a Data Engineer, spoke to the students about the importance of analytics. He said, "My team tracks over a long period, which helps us spot trends throughout the season. Are players improving? Are we underperforming? If someone starts hot and falls off, we must figure out what's happening. Analytics offers much insight—it helps us tell the story behind the numbers."
This program gives students a unique chance to explore sports careers beyond being an athlete. Middle School Principal Ingrid Jackson thanked Hancock Whitney for the opportunity: "Thank you, Hancock Whitney! This is an awesome opportunity for black and brown children to see another career in sports."
At halftime, the students' tallies are checked against the official statistics. Shailyn, an 8th grader at Wilson, said, "I had a super fun experience tallying all the players' points!" Another student, Jodi echoed Green's sentiments, saying, "The night was very fun and energetic! I had a good time."
The Pelicans and Hancock Whitney will host two more groups of junior statisticians from InspireNOLA Charter Schools this season.
